Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB)
The Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB) was established to ensure a fair marketplace, protect consumer rights, enhance industry professionalism, maintain high educational standards, and enforce equitable business practices. Governance by Boards, Agencies, and Commissions in Alberta must be impartial and conducted with integrity. The AFSRB has a responsibility to avoid any actual or perceived conflicts of interest between their private interests and their duty to the public. The Code reflects the values of the Board and provides a framework for ethical and respectful conduct to uphold the Board's reputation. All members of the AFSRB are expected to adhere to this Code, using its intent and spirit to guide their actions, even in situations not explicitly outlined. The Code is accessible on the AFSRB's website to ensure transparency and accountability.
Filing a Complaint
The Alberta Funeral Services Regulatory Board (AFSRB or the “Board”) is empowered by the Alberta Funeral Services Act (the “Act”) to consider and investigate complaints regarding the conduct or actions of any person licensed pursuant to the Alberta Funeral Services Act.
A complaint is an expression of concern about the conduct or action of any person or funeral services business licensed pursuant to the Funeral Services Act and Regulations. The AFSRB will investigate concerns that fall under our jurisdiction and that the AFSRB has authority over.
Some of the concerns that the AFSRB does not have authority over and therefore are unable to investigate are: concerns regarding the cost of goods and services (pricing is not captured in the Funeral Services legislation) environmental issues such as crematory emissions (the AFSRB does not have the expertise or authority to investigate air quality, however we can confirm proper operating procedures and processes are followed) concerns regarding decedent care at hospitals, the medical examiner's office or other hospice care facilities.
If you are unsure if the AFSRB would be able to investigate your concern, you can call the AFSRB office at 1-800-563-4652 or at 780-452-6130 to discuss your particular situation.
